Creating a Wildlife Friendly Grazing Plan: Practical Steps for Working Lands
A well-managed grazing operation can produce healthy livestock and quality forage while also providing valuable wildlife habitat. These goals do not have to compete with one another. In many cases, the same practices that improve soil health, water quality, and pasture recovery can also create better conditions for birds, pollinators, and other wildlife. Wildlife-friendly grazing does not mean allowing the farm to grow wild or removing productive acres from the grazing system. It means considering wildlife when making decisions about grazing timing, stocking density, recovery periods, water access and pasture layout. Even small adjustments can create more food, cover and nesting habitat without interfering with the primary purpose of the operation. The objective is not to leave every paddock tall or to avoid grazing areas that wildlife use. It is to prevent the entire farm from being managed to the same height at the same time. A patchwork of grazed, recovering and rested areas can provide useful habitat while remaining part of a productive grazing system.
The first step is to decide what wildlife you want to support. A plan intended to benefit bobwhite quail may look different from one focused on grassland birds, deer, wild turkey, bats or pollinators. Producers do not need to manage for every species. In many cases, strong management for one species can have many positive benefits for others. Selecting a few realistic goals makes it easier to choose the practices that fit the farm and its livestock. Next, take inventory of the habitat already present. Walk the property and note wooded edges, fence rows, streams, ponds, wetlands, brushy areas and places where wildlife is regularly observed. These areas often have more habitat value than producers realize. Connecting them through thoughtful grazing and vegetation management can make the entire farm more useful to wildlife.
One of the most important goals is creating variety. Wildlife rarely benefits from a landscape where every acre has the same vegetation height and species composition. Some species prefer short grass and exposed ground for feeding while others need taller vegetation for nesting or escape cover. A rotational grazing system naturally creates some of this diversity because recently grazed paddocks sit next to recovering or fully rested paddocks. This does not require sacrificing good forage management. Temporary fencing and the use of virtual fencing can also protect nesting sites, wet areas or patches of flowering plants for part of the year. Once the sensitive period has passed, those areas may be returned to the grazing rotation with little overall impact to the operation as a whole. Wildlife management does not have to begin in the best pasture. Producers can start with field borders, steep slopes, wet areas and other places that are difficult to graze or maintain. These areas may contribute little to livestock production but provide significant wildlife value. Some of this happens naturally in regular pasture management. Being cognizant of it’s value can lead to greater positive impacts.
Timing is especially important during spring and early summer when many birds and other animals are raising young. Delaying mowing or grazing in selected areas can reduce nest disturbance (Here in South Carolina, I do not do any bush hogging on my farm until after May 15th to avoid ground nesting birds). That date will not fit every operation or every location, but it demonstrates how a simple timing decision can contribute to a larger wildlife plan. Local nesting seasons, forage growth and livestock needs should all be considered. It may not be practical to change management across the entire farm, but leaving even a few undisturbed areas can provide meaningful habitat. When mowing is necessary, starting near the center of a field and working outward may help some wildlife move toward the edges instead of trapping them in an increasingly smaller area. Slower equipment speeds in areas with known wildlife activity can also give animals more time to escape.
Water sources should also be included in the plan. Controlled livestock access can reduce erosion and protect vegetation around streams and ponds. Alternative watering systems may improve livestock distribution while allowing riparian areas to recover. When livestock tanks are used, simple wildlife escape ramps can prevent birds and small animals from becoming trapped. Ramps should provide a rough surface that animals can grip and should extend from the bottom of the tank to the rim. This is an inexpensive improvement that can make an important difference.
A wildlife friendly grazing plan should remain flexible. Weather, forage growth and livestock needs change throughout the year. Producers can monitor wildlife through field observations, trail cameras, photographs or acoustic bird monitoring equipment (there are even a few handy apps out there like Merlin that allow you to monitor birds). These observations can then be taken into consideration alongside grazing records, forage condition and livestock performance. The goal is not to manage a farm or ranch as a wildlife refuge. It is to manage a working landscape where livestock production and wildlife habitat support one another. By creating greater vegetation diversity, protecting sensitive areas and adjusting the timing of disturbance, producers can make their grazing systems more resilient and valuable to the wildlife that shares the land. Additionally, it doesn’t hurt to raise a few trophy bucks!
