The Green Between

by Haley Goodwiler

Nestled between two Colorado towns, the Hutchinson Ranch stands as a testament to grit and tradition. For over 160 years, the ranch’s stewards have, as my friend James Rogers says, sustained 'heartbeats on the land'—a powerful reminder that these grass-fed operations are more than working lands; they're a vital ecological and community asset.

Abby Hutchinson is the CEO and manager of the Hutchinson Ranch, the oldest family-owned ranch in the Upper Arkansas Valley. Managing the ranch's Red Angus cow-calf operation, Abby oversees 800 acres, coined by her father, Art, as “The Green Between,” connecting Salida and Poncha Springs.

What makes the Hutchinson Homestead different than some other historic building is, this is still a ranch. This is still the same ranch from 160 years ago. It’s the same grass, the same cattle, the same family.

During a visit to this high-altitude ranch, I saw Abby and Art feed the herd, and it was clear that ranching is second nature to them. After graduating from Colorado State University, Abby returned home to take over the operation from her grandfather, Wendell “Doc” Hutchinson. Over the past two decades, she has expanded the ranch into a multifaceted business, balancing tradition and innovation. She has cultivated an event business, turning a historic barn on the property into a venue for weddings, live music, and community gatherings.

Collaboration is essential, and the Hutchinson Ranch partners with organizations such as Guidestone Colorado to provide hands-on agricultural experiences for the next generation. These programs offer the public an opportunity to connect with the land and learn about homesteading and ranching. Several locals mentioned that expecting parents sign up years in advance to ensure their child can attend.

Abby also plays an active role in preserving Chaffee County’s agricultural legacy through her involvement with the Fair Board and the Chaffee County Cattlemen’s Association. Her efforts ensure the county’s fair and rodeo remain relevant while also fostering stronger connections between ranchers and the broader community.

The Hutchinson Ranch sells all-natural, 100% grass-fed beef. They process at local facilities, specifically Scanga Meat and Westcliffe Meats, ensuring high quality while investing in the local economy. By purchasing directly from the ranch, beef eaters can enjoy delicious local beef while helping sustain a family-owned operation. To learn more or purchase Hutchinson Ranch beef, CLICK HERE.
